Newcastle United have made their first major signing of the summer recently as they officially announced the arrival of Anthony Elanga. They are reportedly also close to reaching an agreement with Burnley for goalkeeper James Trafford. However, the Magpies still need a number of reinforcements, including a reliable centre-back.
Newcastle’s troublesome injury problems at the back last season are nothing unknown, and the club is looking to avoid a repeat in the future. So, a new centre-back has become a necessity for the Magpies. They were recently linked with a move for Bayern Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, but his price tag of €100 million makes a deal unlikely.
Nevertheless, the club has now set their eyes on another centre-back who could prove to be a cost-effective alternative. According to L’Equipe (via London World), Newcastle are interested in Chelsea out-of-favour defender, Axel Disasi, for the centre-back role.

Chelsea brought in Disasi from AS Monaco for a fee of €45 million in 2023. However, his value has dropped since then, and he is currently available for a reported amount of €30 million, which shouldn’t be a problem for Newcastle to meet. That said, the Magpies face competition from Spanish side Villarreal, who are also interested in the player.
The 27-year-old centre-back spent last season on loan to Aston Villa, but they decided not to sign him permanently, and Disasi has returned to Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca sees Disasi as an excess to the squad’s current needs. The player was also left out of the Blues squad that travelled to the USA for the Club World Cup.
It’s now only a matter of time before Disasi departs Chelsea. With Newcastle actively looking to bolster their backline, St James’ Park could be his next destination. But for now, these are just speculations, and we have to wait and see how this pans out.
