With Tottenham reportedly interested in the promising right-back, Newcastle United should battle to sign him.

Newcastle United have been linked with a lot of big names since the takeover talks have intensified. Most of these players are in their prime or on the backend of it. In recent days, rumors have been floating around that Tottenham may be interested in signing Ajax right-back Sergino Dest. With the expected major financial investment coming soon, Newcastle United should do its best to secure Dest ahead of Spurs.

The teenager has made less than 40 appearances for Ajax’s first team, but 25 of those came in the Eredivise and Champions League this season. He has five assists in the league, too. He has good pace and is willing to go forward while also not being a liability on the backend. He’s also made three appearances for the United States national team and chose to stick with the Stars and Stripes over the Netherlands.

As we mentioned with the Phil Foden piece, the impact of Dest would be for the long-term. While he’s a starting player on a Champions League side, he wouldn’t transform the Magpies immediately like a big-money, older player like James Rodriguez or Gareth Bale would.

Currently, Steve Bruce has Javier Manquillo, DeAndre Yedlin, and Emil Krafth at the position. Manquillo really improved this season, but that could be an outlier after a slow start with the club. Yedlin has battled injuries and reportedly wants a move away from the club and Krafth disappointing in limited action.

With Dest, you would be acquiring a 19-year-old that has played in some big matches already. He can take over the job immediately and be your mainstay on the right flank for the foreseeable future. Newcastle United should shell out the cash to secure Dest ahead of Spurs and Bayern Munich, a destination he is rumored to be interested in.
