In place of DeAndre Yedlin, Javier Manquillo has excelled in the last two matches for Newcastle United.
Javier Manquillo is now in his third season with Newcastle United after signing from Atletico Madrid. After some poor loan moves away from Atletico, he didn’t impress in his first season with the Magpies and looked overwhelmed and not prepared for the English top-flight in 21 EPL appearances. He played in fewer matches last season, but he was a bit more confident and proved that he can be a backup player. In his six appearances this season, especially the last two starts, Manquillo is showcasing the ability of a starting-caliber defender at this level.
He started in place of an injured DeAndre Yedlin vs. Manchester City and handled the duty of marking Raheem Sterling. After a quality performance, he got the chance to start at Sheffield United. In the 2-0 win, he played well defensively and swung in a beautiful cross on Allan Saint-Maximin’s goal. His defensive confidence continues to rise and while he doesn’t have as much pace as Yedlin, he does have some ability going forward and is a quality crosser of the ball.
It will be difficult for Manquillo to overtake Yedlin as the first-choice option at the right wing-back. But, the great clubs have true competition all over the pitch. With his positive form and youth (25 years old), he will truly push Yedlin for the starting spot, especially with the American’s injury history. Manquillo’s contract runs until June 2020 and the club should work to extend his stay on Tyneside. For now, the Spaniard could see his time in the starting lineup continue against Southampton tomorrow.
