Out of favor at Real Madrid, Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez could return to stardom with Newcastle United.

It’s not surprising these days for Newcastle United to be linked with a player on the outs at their current club. The latest player to fit that mold is James Rodriguez. With the Colombian struggling for consistent time at Real Madrid, he could be one of the big-name additions to the Magpies this offseason.

James played well the past two seasons on loan with Bayern Munich before heading back to Madrid for this campaign. With the German powerhouse, he registered 15 goals and 20 assists in 67 matches. This season, he has one goal and two assists in only 13 matches across all competitions.

The biggest breakout star of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the Colombian international has been dealing with lofty expectations after tallying six goals and two assists in Brazil. He battled a calf injury at the 2018 tournament, but he still registered two assists, both coming in a win over Poland.

With his vision and passing ability, James is one of those players that can transform the club’s attack. He can play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder. You could plug him into the attack with Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron and that immediately helps whoever is playing at striker.

Rodriguez has been linked with a move to the Premier League before and now seems like the perfect time to make that transition. A player that brings top skills and major star power, Newcastle United should definitely consider meeting Madrid’s reported £28m asking price for their out-of-favor midfielder.
