Newcastle United keep rolling with a spectacular showing at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United have not always had the best of luck against Arsenal in recent years, with their last home win versus the Gunners coming in 2005. Sunday was a different story for the Toon though, as a hard-fought victory has the club exactly where they want to be.

A 2-1 triumph over the North Londoners puts the Magpies at 41 points through 33 fixtures, and tenth place looks extremely comfortable for the team moving forward into the season’s final weeks. Manager Rafa Benitez certainly did not want to guarantee anything, but top-flight safety has surely now arrived.

The match began with some concern, as Alexandre Lacazette scored in the 14th minute to provide a 1-0 advantage for the visitors. With both sides struggling early to create chances, it was potentially a major setback for Newcastle.

However, the response was instead magnificent. An excellent pass from DeAndre Yedlin found its way to Ayoze Perez, and the Spaniard’s equaliser came at just the right moment.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech could perhaps have done better, but it was a scintillating strike by a player in fine form and brimming with confidence.

The two sides entered the half-time break at 1-1, and the key moments would arrive after a crucial substitution.

The second half

The introduction of Islam Slimani brought a true shift in the game, as Arsenal’s defence could not contain the striker’s movements and passing.

The Algerian helped to set up the winner with Perez, and Matt Ritchie delivered in the 68th minute.

Moments arrived late for manager Arsene Wenger’s squad, although United were able to hang on for all three points. The Toon’s next match will be at Everton on April 23.
