A look back at the best additions in recent history for Newcastle United.

The January transfer period will be coming to a close this week, as clubs around the world look to add the talent that can help them to achieve their goals for 2017-18. Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez are hoping that they can add significant reinforcements to their team before deadline day concludes as well.

The Magpies have not always had the best of successes in this area, but there certainly have been incredible players that have made their way to St. James’ Park over the years. This is the case even going back several decades, but the Premier League era specifically has seen remarkable footballers influence the North East in fantastic and memorable ways.

Plenty of special individuals have made the Toon proud to this day, one being the late Gary Speed. For a fee of £5.5 million, Everton did not get as much as perhaps they should have in 1998 for the Welsh international.

Speedo was a key component in the midfield for several successful Newcastle sides. At the same position, Yohan Cabaye later made a tremendous impact on Tyneside also.

The Frenchman arrived ahead of a magical 2011-12 campaign that saw the Magpies put the pressure on the top four of the Premier League table.

When compiling this list, a few crucial areas were accounted for more than others. As opposed to simply how good each player was, what they accomplished and their transfer fees were taken into consideration.

What we wanted to find were the players that brought the most value to the North East. Comparing those figures to the massive numbers in today’s market is staggering, and definitely illustrates a stark contrast.
