Points will not come easy for Newcastle United as they will host Arsenal at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

In an intriguing match between Newcastle United and Arsenal, the tenth-place Magpies aim to steal points from the sixth-place Gunners on Sunday. Both sides have been in fine form as of late and they will both play with a sense of urgency to maintain their success.

The last meeting went in Arsenal’s favor, but this time the Gunners travel to the North East. A lot has changed for Newcastle United since they last played Arsenal, and one of those changes is their form at home.

Since December 30th, the Magpies have been undefeated at St. James’ Park. This positive run of form with three wins and three draws in front of their home supporters has enabled Newcastle to climb the table.

Arsenal’s quality and successful Premier League track record needs no introduction. Arsenal may not be in Champions League contention this season due to losing ten matches, but they are still the favorites to win this game.

Rafa Benitez knows that he must prepare his men close to perfection to steal points against this superior opponent. With that being said, here are three key tactics that Newcastle must use against Arsenal.

Ball Distribution

Newcastle United have struggled in maintaining the majority of the possession in matches all season. While possession can be a factor in some matches, the Magpies do not need to worry about it on Sunday. What Newcastle should focus on, however, is utilizing their possession to the fullest.

Instead of chasing the ball around for 90 minutes, Newcastle must spread the ball around. Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie and Kenedy are each capable of spreading the field and altering the attack.

If the Magpies wish to emulate their performance against Manchester United, they must make intelligent and quick passes as they move the ball forward.

Central Midfield Aggression

Shelvey and Mohamed Diame have formed an impressive and aggressive duo in the middle third of the pitch. All eyes should be on central midfield during this match, as Newcastle will aim to disrupt Arsenal’s passing rhythm through aggression. Newcastle are full of confidence and they will not sit back and defend in this match, but Shelvey and Diame must be wary of Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka.

If Newcastle’s midfield duo is known for their strength and hustle, then Arsenal’s midfield duo is recognized for their passing. Shelvey is one of the best passers in the Premier League, but on Sunday he must play balanced football. Newcastle’s rising star must place an equal emphasis on slowing down Arsenal’s attack.

Zonal Marking

Arsenal have several scoring options on the field and it is difficult to man-mark each player at all times. When Arsenal are in close proximity to the opposing goal, they become England’s version of Barcelona. The Gunners enjoy strong team chemistry and this is reflected in their quick, short passes in the penalty area.

The defensive unit will be busy and each player will have a designated role. DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett must utilize their speed on the wings to close passing lanes and block crosses. Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune must utilize their strength and height to intercept the unexpected short lobs or ground passes. Arsenal are a skilled passing team, and Newcastle must find a way to maintain their recent solidity in defense.
