3) Matz Sels – RSC Anderlecht

The position of goalkeeper has seen quite a bit of instability over recent years for Newcastle United, with a constant of rotation of different options and starters. Matz Sels joined the Magpies two years ago, and already seems set to depart after only a limited number of appearances.

The Belgian international is currently at Anderlecht, and seems keen on making his stay at the club permanent.

Mistakes in goal cost him dearly, both with Toon fans and with Rafa Benitez. Before long, the likes of Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot were preferred, and the 26-year-old simply feels like the one on the outside looking in.

Now with Martin Dubravka performing extremely well recently at goalkeeper, it would be shocking to see Sels return to Tyneside other than to complete a final deal out.

He is certainly talented, and has played well at times. But Sels never seemed to truly settle at St. James’ Park, and that can make any player struggle.

It may have been the overall competition in the team, as even now nobody’s place at keeper is completely solid. Sels needs to be the main option, and did not respond well from the work of Darlow and Elliot alongside him.

Matz Sels is not very popular in the North East, and his days at Newcastle United are numbered.
