Newcastle United’s new goalkeeper looks right at home.

Newcastle United’s victory yesterday versus Manchester United was critical in multiple ways, most importantly moving the club out of the Premier League relegation places and up to 13th in the table. Several players put in fine performances, but it was the team’s new goalkeeper who shined brightest at St. James’ Park.

Martin Dubravka earned a victory on his Newcastle debut, and had a tremendous influence in earning three points. The Slovak shot-stopper recorded three saves against the Red Devils, and consistently put himself in great positions to clear out danger in the penalty area.

The 29-year-old also displayed excellent skill with the ball at his feet, with accurate passing and sending long balls forward when required.

His best moment came just before half-time, with the game still at 0-0. Anthony Martial got behind the back-line, and was one-on-one with Dubravka.

However, there was no panic from the keeper and he was able to make a vital save that maintained the team’s budding momentum.

For a player’s first fixture with his new club to come against a team of Manchester United’s quality, it would be easy for confidence to be low or perhaps at a timid level. But Dubravka was not bothered by the immense occasion, and that attitude appeared to radiate with his team-mates as well.

The Magpies now have extra time to prepare for their next league game, travelling to play AFC Bournemouth on February 24.

Manager Rafa Benitez has not been completely satisfied with his options at goalkeeper in 2017-18, as both Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot have not gained his total trust. The Spanish coach’s search has ended in that regard.
