One of Newcastle United’s goalkeepers may not get another opportunity.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez enter this weekend’s match against Manchester United knowing that a spectacular performance will be necessary for a positive result. Strong work from the back-line will be needed, as well as a solid showing from the goalkeeper position.

Recently, Karl Darlow has been the starting choice for Benitez. Martin Dubravka was signed on-loan for the rest of the campaign on deadline day. Lost in all of this has been the Magpies’ starter from the opening game – Rob Elliot.

The 31-year-old has kept three clean sheets and recorded 44 saves in 16 appearances this season. Elliot also saved a crucial penalty in Newcastle’s December win at West Ham.

When the shot-stopper was not a part of United’s team for their last match at Crystal Palace, many thought that Elliot was not fit. However, through his Twitter account, he certainly confirmed that he is ready and prepared to play again.

That is the frustrating part of the situation for Elliot, as it has been injuries at the worst possible moments that have him in this predicament. Benitez seems set with Darlow and Dubravka moving forward, and it will be difficult for Elliot to re-enter the Spanish coach’s plans.

Consistency

The interesting aspect of Newcastle’s goalkeeper conundrum is that each of the three bring different strengths and weaknesses.

Darlow has the ability to make incredible saves, and can make incredible mistakes as well. Dubravka brings international and UEFA Champions League experience, but has yet to play in the Premier League (and just arrived at St. James’ Park).

While Elliot is a consistent performer, criticism of his distribution at the back is a concern for both Benitez and the fans. There is a chance that he will get another shot, but it would also not be surprising if he didn’t receive the opportunity.

Next: Newcastle must be defensive against Manchester United

Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez will want their best players in the line-up as they battle against relegation. Injuries have played a part in Rob Elliot now unfortunately being left out of team selections.
