The ones that just did not work out for the Magpies.

The summer transfer window is coming to a close this month, as clubs around the globe aim to make crucial improvements to their squad. League seasons are well underway across Europe, and sometimes the moves made on “Deadline Day” can make all the difference between success and failure.

However, this is not always the case. And Newcastle United have certainly learned that part of the lesson over the years.

What makes deals on the final day of the transfer period so risky is the panic that can be involved in the ultimate decision. If a team is unsuccessful throughout the previous weeks before signing their potential targets, desperation can sink in.

The media exposure adds pressure on the players, and that element can be overwhelming. But it hasn’t always been so bad for the Magpies on deadline day either.

Nolberto Solano’s return to St. James’ Park for a second spell and Peter Lovenkrands’ new contract both were made official on the last possible day available. In the other direction, the much needed departure of Hatem Ben Arfa from Newcastle to Hull City went through at the death in 2014.

The current window brings many different possibilities, and Rafa Benitez wants his side to be as prepared as possible to have a strong year in the Premier League.

With deadline day approaching this week, we take a look back at five times that Newcastle United got it wrong on the conclusion of a transfer period.
