The latest on the talented winger’s future.

Transfer targets come and go for Premier League sides during the hectic summer months, with offers and deals falling apart sometimes as quickly as they begin to materialise. One potential move that appears to have now been pushed out of sight for Newcastle United is the addition of Liverpool youngster Sheyi Ojo.

More from Newcastle Transfers

Recent reports have the 20-year-old set to join either Fulham or Middlesbrough in the English Championship this season, with the Reds prepared to accept offers from both clubs.

On the surface, this news comes as a disappointment for the club. Ojo would bring pace and quality in the attack. He would be able to stretch opposing defences out wide, creating space for both himself and team-mates in the final third.

But with other players in mind, this could ultimately be a positive conclusion for both the player and for the Magpies.

Reinforcements on the horizon

Norwich City have accepted Newcastle’s bid for Jacob Murphy, with Murphy currently undergoing a medical in Ireland and set to agree to a transfer imminently. When considering this and the permanent signing of Christian Atsu as well, it suddenly seems that Ojo may not be required after all.

For Ojo and his own personal goals, this would not be an ideal situation for a loan deal. He and Liverpool will want to find a club situation that will allow him to gain experience and match-minutes, as his overall skills progress and evolve.

While he was certainly highly rated by Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, the Spanish tactician should not lose any sleep over missing out on adding Ojo to his line-up.

Clubs looking to utilise loans for players, on both sides of the transaction, need to ensure that they each benefit from the terms of the deal. For Newcastle United and Sheyi Ojo, the timing just was not right to move ahead.
