American defender DeAndre Yedlin provides some flair to Newcastle United roster.

Supporters cheer for players because of their skills. Players become fan favorites because of their personalities. DeAndre Yedlin was loved by Toon Army in his first season with Newcastle United. That was mostly due to him locking up one flank of the pitch and his electric pace, but also because he brings a necessary sense of style to the club.

The most easily identifiable aspect of the right back’s style is his hair. Dating back to his time starring at the University of Akron, his hairstyles have been eye catching. In a Newcastle Toons exclusive interview last year with fashion expert Naz Perez, she mentioned how impressed she is with Yedlin’s array of hair styles. Apparently, that trend started well before he reached college.

In this generation, fans often get to know their team’s players best on the internet. Yedlin is something of a social media star.  He has 263K followers on his official Instagram. His “Talmbout Nothing” joking taunt videos, sometimes directed at his close pals and teammates Achraf Lazaar or Rolando Aarons, are mainstays on his Instagram story. He has the most followers, 350K, of any player on the club with an official account on Twitter. Yedlin doesn’t hide that he has fun in between his training sessions and workouts, and he allows fans an inside look into that entertainment.

On the pitch, Yedlin shows a childlike excitement each match and it’s a breath of fresh air. He truly seems to love playing the sport we love to watch. He’s been loved at his previous club stops, as well as with the US men’s national team. As the 24 year old continues to improve his performances for Newcastle, his persona will continue to grow Tyneside. He has a fan friendly play style with an equally exciting personality. On a club that doesn’t have a ton of characters, DeAndre Yedlin gives Newcastle United a big boost in charisma.
