Newcastle United have recently brought in Aaron Ramsdale as only their second signing of the summer. As we enter the final month of the transfer window, the club still have a lot of areas to strengthen. Among them, the striker position is of utmost importance, especially as the Alexander Isak saga drags on.

Newcastle have already identified some candidates, with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko appearing as a prime target. The club have even launched an initial bid for the player, although reports suggest that Leipzig deem the offer insufficient, with further developments awaited.

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, the Magpies have been linked with the Slovenian striker’s club teammate Lois Openda as well. However, it looks like Newcastle aren’t the only Premier League team keeping an eye on the player.

Sunderland enter race to sign Lois Openda who has been previously linked with Newcastle United

According to a Sky Sports reporter, Florian Plettenberg, Sunderland have added Lois Openda to their shortlist for this summer transfer window. However, he further stated that it is questionable whether RB Leipzig would also be willing to let the 25-year-old leave, especially if they sell both Xavi Simons and Sesko.

This new development wouldn’t matter much if Newcastle manage to sign Sesko. But Manchester United are reportedly also pushing hard to secure the Slovenian striker. So in case the Red Devils manage to hijack this deal much like they did with Bryan Mbeumo, the Magpies could be forced to shift their focus to Openda.

In the scenario that Newcastle move for the Belgian striker in the future, they will have to fight off Sunderland as well, on top of the clubs already present in the race for the player. So the next few weeks will be crucial to see whether the Magpies can secure their primary target Sesko or miss out on yet another signing and turn their attention elsewhere.
