Real reason Newcastle decided against signing 28y/o striker for free

The reason behind Newcastle’s decision to allow a 28-year-old striker to move to a rival Premier League club for free, despite needing reinforcement in that position themselves, has recently been revealed.

Things at Newcastle United transfer department are slowly picking up pace lately. The club have now completed the signing of three new players after the recent acquisition of Malick Thiaw. Additionally, the Magpies are also close to finalising a deal for Aston Villa player Jacob Ramsey.

However, Newcastle are yet to fulfil one of their top priorities since the beginning of the summer, that is reinforcing the striker position. There’s uncertainty looming large over the future of Isak, who is still training alone. Meanwhile, the Magpies have missed almost all of their striker targets, including Hugo Ekitike, Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and most recently Benjamin Sesko.

Now another player has followed suit, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin reportedly having medical at Leeds United and in the final stages of completing a move for free. The 28-year-old striker has been without a team since June after his contract with Everton ran out.

Recently, reports have revealed the reason why the Magpies didn’t move for the player despite needing a striker. According to The Guardian, Newcastle are among a number of clubs who had considered Calvert-Lewin, but they decided he was too injury-prone.

Newcastle let go of Dominic Calvert-Lewis due to his injury prone nature

Calvert-Lewin suffered from a hamstring injury last season and was out for about 100 days. Moreover, even when fit, the player’s numbers weren’t that impressive, with him scoring just three goals in 26 Premier League appearances for Everton last campaign. So, Newcastle have likely made the right decision by not pursuing the player.

Nevertheless, the Magpies have identified other candidates as well, with Yoane Wissa emerging as the top target to join the club. Brentford are prepared to let him leave, but not before they sign a replacement, which remains the only hurdle in the deal as the player is keen on the move.

The next few weeks will be crucial in deciding who leads the attack for Newcastle in the 2025–26 season. Will it be a new signing, or will Isak reconsider and stay at the club? That remains to be seen.
