Newcastle United face a challenging trip to the Etihad Stadium this weekend to take on Manchester City, but Eddie Howe’s side is grappling with injury concerns ahead of the crucial Premier League fixture. While the Magpies secured a thrilling 3-2 FA Cup victory over Birmingham City last weekend, the win came at a cost, with several key players now facing fitness tests.

As per SportsMole, Jamaal Lascelles (knee) and Harvey Barnes (muscle) remain sidelined, while Anthony Gordon (thigh), Joelinton (knee), Sven Botman (knee), and Dan Burn (groin) all missed the Birmingham clash. Gordon’s injury is not considered serious, and the winger is expected to be available for Saturday’s game. However, Joelinton, Botman, and Burn will need late assessments to determine their availability.
Defensive Dilemmas for Howe
Nick Pope made his return in goal against Birmingham, but Howe must decide whether to stick with the goalkeeper or recall Martin Dubravka. In defence, Fabian Schar and Lewis Hall are set to return, with Valentino Livramento likely to feature. Botman or Burn could also start if deemed fit, while Emil Krafth remains another option for Howe.
Joe Willock, who scored twice in the FA Cup, will hope to retain his place in midfield. However, Joelinton’s potential return could see him partner Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in the engine room. In attack, Alexander Isak, Newcastle’s top scorer with 17 Premier League goals this season, is expected to lead the line. If Gordon passes his fitness test, he will likely start on the left wing, with Jacob Murphy on the right. Callum Wilson, now back from injury, will provide cover from the bench.
