Newcastle United are staring at yet another disappointing transfer window if things don’t pickup pace soon in the arrivals department. The only major signing the Magpies have managed to pull off is Anthony Elanga, who joined from Nottingham Forest. Since then, Newcastle have drawn a blank in terms of new signings.
What’s even more concerning is the fact that the Magpies have once again failed to secure their target, as they recently lost the race to secure Hugo Ekitike, who has decided to join Liverpool instead. This was surely a major setback for the Magpies, but the club seems to have already moved on and identified a potential alternative candidate. Reports have suggested that Newcastle might be looking to bring a Chelsea forward to St James’ Park.
Si Phillips has stated in his Substack, Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, that Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in Christopher Nkunku.
Newcastle United interested in Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku
Chelsea are looking to part ways with Nkunku despite the player appearing in six matches and scoring a knockout-stage goal for the club in their Club World Cup-winning journey.
Chelsea brought the French international for a fee of £52 million from RB Leipzig, but he has failed to make any significant impact for the Blues. As a result, the player is expected to find a new club soon.
Nkunku can operate in multiple areas on the pitch, including centre forward, attacking midfield, and the left wing. Newcastle can benefit from his versatility in case they sign the player. That said, Nkunku has suffered from injuries and poor form in the past two seasons, so the Magpies will have to properly evaluate everything before taking a concrete decision regarding a deal.
Apart from Newcastle, clubs like Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Premier League sides like Manchester United and Nottingham Forest are also interested in the player, so a tug-of-war situation cannot be ruled out. If Newcastle are serious about landing Nkunku, the Magpies will need to act swiftly to avoid yet another miss.
