One of the positions Newcastle United are looking to bolster ahead of next season, especially with the Champions League in mind, is the striker position. The club needs a player to partner with Alexander Isak, who is expected to stay at the club despite earlier uncertainty.
Things were picking up pace for the Magpies in terms of securing their long-time target Hugo Ekitike, and the club even placed a record bid to Eintracht Frankfurt for the player. However, the deal fell through, with the player now close to joining Liverpool.
Newcastle have already left the race for the French striker and have shifted their focus to other alternative candidates who could be a good fit for the job. Now, it looks like the Magpies have found their candidate, or rather rediscovered someone who was previously on their radar.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook (via NUFCBlog.co.uk) Newcastle might be interested in RB Leipzig’s striker Benjamin Sesko. Crook stated:
"Benjamin Sesko could be the next name on the list in terms of a striker target for Newcastle. He is someone who Eddie Howe has admired for a long time."
Newcastle could rekindle their interest in RB Leipzig’s striker Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko had a good season with RB Leipzig, which saw him bag 21 goals along with six assists in 45 appearances in all competitions. As a result, the Slovenian international is sought after by several European clubs, including Premier League sides like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United, apart from Newcastle.
It is noteworthy that Newcastle recently lost the race for Joao Pedro as well, who has joined Chelsea and had an incredible impact upon his arrival, scoring three goals in three Club World Cup appearances for the club, who eventually won the tournament.
So if these recent setbacks are anything to go by, Newcastle will have to act fast and in a decisive manner to avoid a similar situation in the case of Sesko as well, if they truly wish to sign the player.
