Newcastle United are focused on strengthening their squad in the ongoing transfer window ahead of next season with multiple trophies up for grabs including the Champions League. They have secured the services of Anthony Elanga as their first major signing and have also brought in 18 year-old youngster Antonio Cordero for free.
Newcastle are reportedly engaged in talks with Burnley for their keeper James Trafford. The Magpies have already reached a personal agreement with the player. However the deal has faced some unforeseen delays in it’s completion. And now reports suggest that Newcastle could be handed a major setback in their pursuit of the English keeper as Manchester City could hijack the deal.
Fabrizio Romano recently posted on X stating that Manchester City are considering a move for James Trafford to return to the club this summer, but only if one of City’s two main goalkeepers leave. Romano further wrote that Manchester City, who hold a buy back clause for Trafford have already made contact which is the reason Newcastle move is not sealed yet.
Manchester City could hijack Newcastle target James Trafford
Trafford impressed in the last season and is slated to become England’s number one goalkeeper in the near future. With Newcastle considering parting ways with Martin Dubravka this summer, Trafford could be the perfect replacement and a long-term solution between the posts.
The 22-year-old keeper came through Manchester City’s youth academy and joined Burnley in 2023. The recent news of a possible homecoming to his boyhood club now poses a fresh roadblock for the Magpies In their pursuit of Trafford.
All things considered, Newcastle still have an agreement in place with the player personally which could be a major factor in this transfer saga. We hope to find out soon if Trafford’s future lies at St. James’ Park or back at the Etihad.
