Newcastle linked with Champions League winner they nearly signed instead of Isak

Newcastle United have recently been linked with a PSG star they monitored three years ago, before opting to sign Alexander Isak instead.

Newcastle United are yet to bring in a new striker although the final month of the transfer window is underway. The position already needed some reinforcements before the Alexander Isak saga kicked off and now the importance is even more. Eddie Howe was recently left with only William Osula at his disposal for the centre-forward role as Isak was left out of the pre-season squad and trained alone.

Benjamin Sesko is currently the frontrunner to be signed by the Magpies but apart from the Slovenian international, players like Lois Openda, Randal Kolo Muani, Yoanne Wissa, Endrick and Nicolas Jackson have also been linked with the club.

The Sesko deal is said to be advancing well but the club isn’t taking any risks this time in case the deal for the 22-year-old falls through and it looks like the club have already identified another potential candidate for the role. According to Daily Mail, PSG striker Goncalo Ramos is on Newcastle’s radar as an alternative to Sesko.

The Portuguese striker has enjoyed an incredible last season with both his club and country, winning multiple trophies including the Champions League with PSG and the Nations League with Portugal.

Newcastle United interested in PSG striker Goncalo Ramos

Ramos played in as many as 46 matches for PSG across all competitions last season, scoring 19 goals and providing 6 assists. A significant number of his appearances came off the bench, which is not surprising considering the star-studded lineup of the Parisian club.

Meanwhile, PSG are reportedly open to letting Ramos leave, and St. James' Park could be his next destination. Interestingly, this is not the first time the Magpies have been linked with the Portuguese striker, as they had been monitoring him three years ago before choosing to sign Isak instead.

While this is just a rumour at the moment, fans should not be surprised if Newcastle decide to make a move for the player in the near future. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining who the new face of the Magpies' attack will be next season. But for now we have to patiently wait and watch.
