Newcastle United have recently brought Aaron Ramsdale on loan as the second major signing of this transfer window. Anthony Elanga is the other signing who arrived few weeks ago. However, the Magpies still have a number of other areas they would like to bolster ahead of next season.

The requirement for striker is already a well known fact, more so with the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak situation. But apart from that the Magpies are also looking to add a new face at the heart of their defence owning to the struggles faced last season due to injuries.

Newcastle have already been linked with a few names including Axel Disasi, Giorgio Scalvini, and Giovanni Leoni, among others, although none of the deals have materialised as of yet. Meanwhile, reports have now emerged suggesting that the Magpies have identified another new candidate for the role.

According to Voetbal International (via One Football), Newcastle United along with Tottenham Hotspurs are interested in Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Apparently, the Seagulls want to extend the Dutch international’s stay at the club, as he has just two years left on his contract and have been trying to negotiate an extension. However, Hecke has reportedly made it clear that he is unwilling to sign a new deal as wants to move to a club where he can play in the Champions League.

At just 25 years of age, Hecke has established himself as one of the regulars in Brighton’s backline. He appeared in 39 matches in all competitions for the Seagulls last season.

However, with Brighton failing to qualify for the Champions League yet again, having finished eighth in the Premier League, the Dutch international could be on the move, and St James’ Park could be his next destination as he could experience European football there.

Brighton are looking for a fee of about €50m to part ways with Hecke. Although the current price tag won’t be a problem for Newcastle, competition from other clubs could potentially drive the price up in case of a bidding war.

Newcastle would certainly want to avoid such a scenario as they have already suffered enough in this transfer window, having missed out on multiple targets. So, could Hecke be the third major signing of this summer for the Magpies, or is it just another rumour? We have to wait and watch to find out.
