This summer, it seems as if Newcastle United can’t manage to shake off Liverpool from ruining their transfer plans. Magpies’ long-time target, Hugo Ekitike, has already joined the Reds despite a club record bid by Newcastle. Additionally, their primary striker Isak is also pushing for an exit, and Anfield is the most likely destination. Now Liverpool are back in the Magpies’ rearview mirror for another target.

Newcastle are having quite an underwhelming transfer window, to say the least. They have managed to bring in only two major signings, Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale. That said, Malick Thiaw has reportedly completed his medical with the Magpies and is awaiting an official announcement from the club. However, just when things were looking a bit more positive, Liverpool seem to have now entered the race for another one of Newcastle’s targets.

Earlier, it was reported that Newcastle are interested in Parma centre-back Giovanni Leoni and have even made an enquiry for the player. Now, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Liverpool FC are seriously considering Leoni, the talented 18-year-old promising centre-back as an option. He is high on the list, and should a move for Marc Guehi fall through, it is possible they will push for Leoni.

Leoni is one of the most highly-rated youngsters available in the market right now, and Newcastle were keeping an eye on the player. Although a move this summer seems unlikely, the Magpies could have moved for the player in the future.

However, Liverpool entering the race for the player will certainly be a setback to their plans, if any, as the Reds will likely push the price higher like they have done on multiple instances this summer. Moreover, if the Reds manage to secure the Italian defender in this window, then it is unlikely that Newcastle will be able to sign him anytime soon.

Anyway, this new development may not sting as much, as the Magpies have reportedly already agreed on a deal to sign Thiaw from AC Milan. The 24-year-old is expected to be a key part of Newcastle’s defensive line alongside Sven Botman for years to come. All that said, let’s see how the Magpies proceed in the last few weeks of the transfer window and which players they target next.
