The clock is ticking for Newcastle United to fulfil their transfer targets for this summer as we enter the final few weeks of the transfer window. The Magpies continue their search for a new striker following the latest snub by Benjamin Sesko, who has decided to join Manchester United instead. However, there’s another position which has been largely overshadowed. That is the centre-back position.

Since the beginning of the transfer window, Newcastle have been looking to bring in a reliable new face for their backline but haven’t succeeded till now. Recently, it was reported that Newcastle are interested in AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw as a candidate for the centre-back role.

Now, there seem to be some major new developments regarding the transfer of the German international. According to Fabrizio Romano, the plan is confirmed for Thiaw to fly to Newcastle from Milano. The medical and contract signing is expected to be completed on Monday.

Malick Thiaw is flying to Newcastle United shortly to complete his move to the club

Thiaw will be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s squad. Apart from his primary centre-back position, the German international can also operate in the defensive midfield and right-back areas. So he will provide the manager with options and depth in a upcoming  season with multiple trophies up for grabs.

Also, at just 24, Thiaw will bring fresh new legs to an aging Newcastle backline, with three of the current four centre-backs over the age of 30. As a result, the player will offer a long-term solution to the Magpies' defensive needs.

Newcastle fans will be excited to finally receive some positive news on the transfer front, although a 'Here we go' is still awaited from Romano. Thiaw will join his former teammate Sandro Tonali at the club. It remains to be seen whether the German defender can be as successful as the Italian midfielder.
