Just a day ago Newcastle Toons reported that Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis and Watford were in a discussion to join one another in order to revive the career of Lewis.

Now, the deal has become a reality, but not in the way Lewis was hoping for.

Heading into the 2023 summer transfer window, it was on the minds of many what the future for Lewis looked like in a Newcastle kit.

However, once it began, it became clear that the two sides were looking to part ways.

After taking a break from the team towards the end of the 2022-23 Premier League season, Lewis returned and informed the club that he was looking to find a new home where he could get first-team reps.

When the rumors emerged that Watford was interested, it became clear that the fresh start he was looking for could come in a favorable situation.

While it would have been better for Lewis to see his name emerge as a transfer, the Magpies have been rumored to be in talks for a season-long loan, instead of a permanent transaction.

Personal terms are understood to not be an issue as this deal was bound to happen, but at this stage, it is unclear whether or not the talks will include an option to buy Lewis at the end of the loan spell.

Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe confirmed the news while on the team’s U.S. Tour saying a deal will likely happen within the next 24 hours.

This move makes sense for the Magpies as he played in 26 outings during his inaugural 2020-21 season with the club before playing in just 10 contests over the last two seasons. With his role fizzling out within the rotation, a move needed to be made eventually.

This loan allows for him to grow while in the EFL Championship with Watford, and if he does start to capitalize on his potential, the club can then bring him back at the end of his loan to become a prominent piece for this Champions League side.
