Newcastle United have now entered talks with Watford on the potential for a transfer of defender Jamal Lewis.

The Hornets have been active in attempting to bring the left-back to the club during the summer transfer window as they prepare to bounce back in the coming EFL Championship season.

Recent reports claim that Newcastle will be on the way to giving Lewis the green light to leave this summer if the opportunity were to present itself. With the Magpies already having an abundance of filler defenders, his need on the team is at an all-time low.

Currently, the club has Matt Targett, Dan Burn and Paul Dummett in a spot to play the left-back position, with the team being involved with rumors on incoming transfers in hopes to grow their defense ahead of an exciting 2023-24 campaign.

Lewis joined the Magpies in the 2020 season from Norwich City, and since the beginning, he has barely been involved with the team’s day-to-day actions. In the 2022-23 season, he appeared in just four contests for the club.

Manager Eddie Howe has shown that he views Lewis as a ‘backburner player’ and that he will rarely see the pitch with the squad he currently has.

Earlier in the season Lewis took time away from the team to focus on his mental health while also viewing his future with the club from an outside view. After coming back from this break, he deemed his time with the club was coming to a close.

So, heading into the summer window it was expected that he would eventually end up on a new squad.

The 25-year-old is attempting to revive his career after inconsistencies on the pitch and injuries slowed his potential at St. James Park.

Not only would this move be good for Lewis, but also for the Magpies as both sides gear up to go in different directions in the coming season.

Joining a team like Watford would certainly give Lewis more time on the pitch to flourish and improve his game in the EFL Championship. Also, with his contract expiring in two seasons, Lewis could make lateral moves to make his way into a more ideal club.
