Newcastle United pulled off a very smart deal in January when they signed Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa. The left-back has proven to be one of the standout performers in Eddie Howe’s team over the past few months and as a result, it should not come as any surprise that the club are expected to complete a permanent deal for him in the summer. It is believed that a £15 million transfer fee would be enough to sign him.

But now, some surprising rumours have emerged surrounding Newcastle United and it appears that they might have their eyes on another left-back.

As reported by TUTTOmercatoWEB, Newcastle United are ready to make a €25 million transfer offer for Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi.

Thus, one has to wonder what such a move would mean for the long-term future of Targett at St James’ Park and whether he would be open to a permanent move under such circumstances.

Despite being just 24 years of age, Lodi has some impressive experience under his belt already. He has represented one of the top clubs in Europe in the form of Atletico Madrid for a few years now. At the same time, he has been in the Brazilian national team picture as well and made multiple appearances for them too.

Thus, it is not hard to see why a club would be interested in someone like Lodi. But at the same time, would it be smart to make a move for the Brazilian international, when Newcastle United have the chance to sign Targett, who has already proven himself in the Premier League and at St James’ Park.

It will be very interesting to see what the future holds for the left-back spot at Newcastle United and whether the club end up signing Targett or Lodi, or both, or possibly even neither in the upcoming summer transfer window.
