Newcastle United suffer unexpected Jesse Lingard blow
Jesse Lingard is a player that Newcastle United have been linked with for a long time. The Magpies were believed to be close to getting a deal over the line in January but ultimately could not reach terms with Manchester United. The England international’s contract with the Red Devils runs out this summer though meaning that he could walk out as a free agent.
Lingard might be going through a tough season at Manchester United but he showed his quality while on a half season loan at West Ham United in 2021 and during that period of time, he was one of the most in-form players in the entire Premier League.
Thus, it goes without saying that there would be no lack of interest in Lingard’s signature if he was available as a free agent this summer but rumours have suggested that Newcastle United is his preferred destination.
While someone like Lingard would be a solid signing for Eddie Howe’s side, Newcastle United have been handed an unexpected blow in the race to sign him. It has been believed for months that the player was on his way out of Old Trafford but now, it looks like there is a chance that Erik ten Hag could throw him a Manchester United lifeline. As reported by The Sun, a source said:
"“Jesse hasn’t been happy this season.“He feels let down that he hasn’t played as much as he wanted and feels promises made to him when he came back from West Ham haven’t been kept.“He was resigned to the idea that he was going to leave and make a fresh start at another club.“But Ten Hag has let it be known he wants to speak with him and if he gives him the assurances he needs, Jesse could be persuaded to stay.“United is his club and he’s never wanted to leave.”"
Newcastle United suffer unexpected Lingard transfer blow
It is safe to say that this is not something that many people would have expected, considering how little football Lingard has played this season. But there is a chance that he could end up extending his stay at Manchester United.
There is no reason to see this as a huge problem for Newcastle United though, who have enjoyed a tremendous time since the turn of the year despite failing to sign Lingard in January.
And even if he is not available in the summer, the club would surely bring in a suitable player to fill in the position of need.
