2015-16 FA Cup

Third round: Watford 1, Newcastle United 0

Newcastle United occupied a relegation position as they were set to face 9th-place Watford in the FA Cup. Despite the gap between the clubs on the league table, Steve McClaren’s side actually controlled this match. They finished with higher possession and more shots, but in the final minutes of the first half, Troy Deeney scored the lone goal. Gini Wijnaldum played a poor ball back to Fabricio Coloccini and Deeney easily controlled the ball, got around Rob Elliot, and buried the chance.

The Magpies only had 19 goals in 20 league matches to that point in the season and the lack of goalscoring was their downfall again as Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic could not convert their chances. In the weeks following the match, Newcastle United would get a boost from the arrival of Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend. But, relegation was still on the cards for Newcastle United.

2016-17 FA Cup

Third round: Newcastle United 1, Birmingham City 1

Third round replay: Newcastle United 3, Birmingham City 1

Fourth round: Oxford United 3, Newcastle United 0

The FA Cup run during the 2016-17 season was an interesting one because supporters were not really happy about it. The Magpies were battling for promotion from the Championship and most of the Toon Army was preferring that the club bow out immediately in the FA Cup to allow full focus on the league. Instead, they did the worst possible thing and had to play a replay after a third-round draw with Birmingham City.

Then, the club was embarrassed by League One side Oxford United in the next round. With fans already frustrated that they had advanced, the expectation was that the club recently relegated from the EPL would blow out the third division team and make a deeper run in the cup competition. But, they were outplayed across the pitch and Aleksandar Mitrovic turned in a dismal performance, missing chances during the run of play and having a second-half penalty kick saved.
