2017-18 FA Cup

Third round: Newcastle United 3, Luton Town 1

Fourth round: Chelsea 3, Newcastle United 0

Newcastle United opened their cup run against a League Two side, but Luton Town was not intimidated or embarrassed by the Magpies. Ayoze Perez scored a brace and Jonjo Shelvey added a third before In the third round win, former Newcastle United man Rob Lee saw both of his sons, Elliot and Olly, play at St. James’ Park for Luton against his former side.

With a chance to finally advance past the fourth round, Newcastle United were blasted by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Michy Batshuayi scored a brace and Marcos Alonso added an insurance goal late. Rafa Benitez went with a mix of first-choice players and rotational options as his side was only one point clear of the relegation zone at the time.

2018-19 FA Cup

Third round: Newcastle United 1, Blackburn Rovers 1

Third round replay: Newcastle United 4, Blackburn Rovers 2

Fourth round: Watford 2, Newcastle United 0

Just like the 2016-17 version of the competition, the worst-case scenario for Newcastle United was to have to play a replay of a third-round matchup with a lower division side. Not only did they have to play a replay to defeat Blackburn Rovers, but they also had to go into added extra time to do so. That replay saw Sean Longstaff score his first goal for the senior side and Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong score against his former side.

The next round saw Newcastle United again matched up with Watford and again, they were defeated. Freddie Woodman didn’t do enough to keep out Andre Gray’s opening goal and Isaac Success added another on the counter-attack. The highlight of the match for Newcastle United was Javier Manquillo chipping the goalkeeper, only to see it denied by a defender’s header.
