Newcastle United have not performed well recently in the FA Cup.

After dropping their third consecutive loss in the Premier League on Wednesday, Newcastle United will get a welcome break as they face Rochdale in the third round of the FA Cup. Rochdale defeated Boston United for the opportunity to host Newcastle United in the competition. Before they travel to face the League One side, we look back at the last five seasons of FA Cup action for the Magpies.

2014-15 FA Cup

Third round: Leicester City 1, Newcastle United 0

The very next day after Alan Pardew departed the club to take over Crystal Palace, Newcastle United struggled in their FA Cup opener in January 2015. John Carver, serving as the caretaker manager, decided to rest some of the club’s key players and made seven changes after a 3-3 draw vs. Burnley in his first game in charge on 1/1.

Remy Cabella actually found the back of the net first, but the Newcastle United goal was waved off due to him being in an offside position. Leonardo Ulloa would score the lone official goal as he headed home a cross from Matty James following a quick corner taken by Leicester.

Unrelated to the match specifically, Hatem Ben Arfa’s contract would be “mutually terminated” the day after this defeat. He was not in Carver’s 18-man squad that day.
