Newcastle United should have more options this coming summer.
Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez continue the 2017-18 Premier League campaign today, as they host Huddersfield Town in a critical clash that will affect the season’s relegation battle. Earlier in the week, there was news that could completely alter their future plans.
The Telegraph reported that the Magpies are expected to receive an increased transfer budget in the summer, one larger than what was seen in the current term. The main reasons behind this financial decision are found in two key figures – Benitez and Jamaal Lascelles.
The Toon captain has made it quite clear how important the team’s manager is to success, and to the future of all involved with the club.
“We’ve got a manager who trusts us and he wants to be here, the fans are with him, so that’s really important for the players.”
The frustrations for Benitez have been clear since he signed on two years ago, and it has mostly been in regards to the transfer budget.
Throughout this past summer and into the January deadline, United were left with false hope and empty promises in terms of the reinforcements that would be available.

With rumours of Chelsea and West Ham interested in Lascelles, owner Mike Ashley may be recognising how serious the situation is at St. James’ Park.
Two that must remain
The loss of Benitez and Lascelles would be devastating, both on the pitch and off for Newcastle. Benitez’s coaching abilities, tactics and leadership were crucial to immediate promotion from the Championship last season, and are the foundation of what is keeping the club above the relegation zone at the present time.
Lascelles is one of the most promising defenders in the top flight, and motivates his team-mates to better performances. A true fan favourite as well, the 24-year-old is the ideal captain for the Magpies.

No matter what the future may hold for Mike Ashley and Newcastle United, he must find a way to ensure that Rafa Benitez and Jamaal Lascelles are with the side in 2018-19. If it means increasing funds, then now is the appropriate time.
