Newcastle United will likely look to off-load these players in the summer.

Progression in football is not always easy to achieve, as it can be difficult for players to develop in the same way. Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez face this unique challenge at the present time, and loans can be a key element to eventual success.

Able to work in both directions, loans often provide short-term answers for long-terms goals. Incoming deals can have a tremendous impact, as we have seen for the Toon with Kenedy and Martin Dubravka.

However, the focus here will be more on the other way. The Magpies have several players out on-loan in various countries and leagues, each with the hope of gaining crucial minutes that can improve their overall game.

In most cases, Newcastle will be expecting the individuals involved to contribute to the first team at some point. Loans will often involve younger talent, with more match-minutes necessary but usually more difficult to guarantee.

Forward Ivan Toney is currently with Scunthrope United, while defender Jamie Sterry is finishing out the campaign with Crewe Alexandra. Exciting goalkeeping prospect Freddie Woodman is in Scotland with Aberdeen, and Rolando Aarons is experiencing the Serie A with Hellas Verona.

Most fans would expect to see those players back at St. James’ Park in the near future, with all possessing the promise of something special for United. However, that is not the case for everyone in this particular type of situation.

We highlight and review five Newcastle United players currently on-loan that may not play again for the Magpies following this season.
