24 hours that should be both remembered and forgotten by fans.

The transfer deadline day can bring about a wide range of emotions, as expectations and reality are two areas that do not always align. But for Newcastle United and the Toon Army, frustrations reached extreme levels yesterday, and moves made by key individuals at the club did not seem to help the situation at all.

The Magpies ultimately did not complete any incoming transactions, and were unable to close on deals that appeared set. Loans for Matt Targett and Kenedy fell through, and there were a few embarrassing moments along the way as well.

Rafa Benitez was a busy man Thursday, attempting to finalise reinforcements for his squad. Managing director Lee Charnley was at St. James’ Park, but meetings between the two did not produce much positivity.

Benitez reportedly left the training ground soon after discussions.

It was supposed to be different this time

Newcastle fans have been let down in the transfer window before, but the current period feels worse than past occurrences. Back in the top flight once again, club owner Mike Ashley gave the impression that something would be seen this week in terms of new players.

A new defender to help along the back-line while Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett work their way back to full fitness, or a midfielder to help with depth in the line-up.

Instead, there was absolutely nothing.

On a day when Tim Krul joined Brighton and Renato Sanches signed with Swansea, this summer’s transfer deadline day was a true disaster in every possible way for Newcastle.

Suddenly, a result at the Swans next weekend is of the highest priority. With supporters wanting to see more and the manager’s patience being tested, the Magpies face an important test in South Wales.

This was not supposed to happen, but here it is. The following days and weeks will be critical for the futures of both Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez.
