Newcastle United struggled at St. James’ Park in 2017, but they are undefeated at home since January.
A few weeks ago, I published an article that focused on Newcastle’s poor form at St. James’ Park in the last few months of 2017. Fortunately, the Magpies have broken the spell and are undefeated at home in 2018.
Thus far in 2018, the Magpies have played four matches at St. James’s Park. Of the maximum twelve points available in those matches, Newcastle United have taken eight. Those eight points have now created a five-point cushion between Newcastle United and the bottom three.
The Magpies will play at home four more times this season, but here is a list of fixtures the Magpies have played at St. James’ Park since January:
January 13: Newcastle United 1-1 Swansea City
January 31: Newcastle United 1-1 Burnley
February 11: Newcastle United 1-0 Manchester United
March 10: Newcastle United 3-0 Southampton

One thing has been evident since the start of the new year and it is the fact that Newcastle have played aggressive football at home. Rafa Benitez had strong players on his roster all season, but his team has only recently begun playing aggressively as a collective unit. As a result of this collective aggression, playing at St. James’ Park has become even more difficult and intimidating for opponents.
Another key factor that has contributed to Newcastle’s improved form at home has been defensive stability. Consistency on defense has been problematic for Newcastle, but Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett have truly transformed the back line into a wall at home.
Just how well has the defense played at home thus far in 2018? Simply put, the Magpies have only conceded two goals in four home matches. The back four have played tighter defense at St. James’ Park, have become more aware of their surroundings, constantly intercept passes and force opposing teams to play through the wings.
Can The Streak Continue?
Yes, at least for one more match. Newcastle’s next fixture at home will be on March 31 against a struggling Huddersfield Town. Currently sitting 13th in the table with 32 points, the Magpies understand that three points against Huddersfield Town could presumably secure their top flight survival.
After Huddersfield Town, Newcastle will have their hands full against an under-achieving, but talented Arsenal side on April 15.
