“We the people fight for our existence. We don’t claim to be perfect but we’re free.”

It’s that time of year again for Newcastle United supporters. The Magpies are battling against relegation this season, sitting 15th in the Premier League table entering tonight’s match against Burnley. The current situation should be brighter, but the transfer market has brought nothing but angst when examining recent deals.

While Newcastle have added Kenedy on-loan for the rest of the campaign, the Chelsea winger is the only reinforcement ahead of the deadline. With little evidence pointing towards that fact changing, the Toon Army are left in the same position as a year ago.

Meanwhile, striker Daniel Sturridge has joined West Brom and Manchester City have spent more on their defence with Aymeric Laporte.

Earlier this month, football fans saw a swap between Manchester United and Arsenal involving Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Everton signed Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun, with Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho leaving England for the Camp Nou and Chelsea bringing on Ross Barkley.

It all amounts to confusion and anger, as Newcastle fans are forced to simply ponder how this all continues on.

What to do

The “Ashley Out” movement is back in full-force as of late, and understandably so. The situation leaves many fans to wonder how matters will improve on Tyneside.

The rumoured takeover involving Amanda Staveley and PCP Capital Partners meant so much, simply as a beacon of hope for what was ahead. For that deal to fall apart as it has, supporters are only jaded and bitter.

There of course is one more day left in the transfer period, and any progress would be nothing short of a miracle when it comes to the mood around St. James’ Park.
