Numbers may increase, but a creative strategy is necessary.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez are preparing for a new era together, as owner Mike Ashley has stated that he would like to sell the club before the start of the new year. PCP Capital Partners and Amanda Staveley have begun to open talks, and it will be interesting to see if the expansion of St. James’ Park is discussed in the near future.

Adding to the famed Gallowgate End was always looked at as an option, until Ashley’s development company received approval for the construction of office blocks and apartments. The positioning of these plans keeps the exciting idea from being a true possibility.

St. James’ Park is one the iconic grounds in English football, and has seen many aspects change during the past decades.

From the sloping pitch in the club’s founding years to the current naming rights, it seems a conversation that is always taking place in some form.

Attendance numbers remain incredibly consistent, with Newcastle’s recent victory over Crystal Palace again attracting over 50,000 fans.

But could a new (and extremely wealthy) ownership group provide a new vision?

Several moving pieces involved

The issue remains where to put all of the proposed seats, especially in regards to the surrounding communities near St. James’ Park. Ashley’s development work adds to that as well.

Ultimately, the best way to explore the topic may be adjusting sections inside of the stadium.

It is difficult to see how that may work in a massive way, but any additions would certainly be welcomed at a club where support knows no bounds.

Ashley’s Sports Direct signage would assuredly decrease in visibility when he departs, and there is also always the opportunity to modify amenities within the grounds.

Newcastle United will have new ownership leading them very soon. Hopefully, St. James’ Park continues to evolve in a positive way as well.
