While we all wish that Rafa Benitez will stay with the club and get Newcastle United through the Championship, back to Premier League football, the possibility that he won’t is something that cannot be ignored. And potential replacements are being thrown around like crazy.

The most recent link to the management job on Tyneside is current Manchester United assistant manager and legend Ryan Giggs. It is also rumored that should he be offered and take the job, Michael Carrick may join him.

Rumors everyone, rumors. However, there may be something here.

Ryan Giggs has wanted the manager position at Manchester United for years. Ever since he retired, he’s been working to one day get the position that he so desires. To manage the club he played for so many years. He went from the side of David Moyes to the side of Louis Van Gaal. Both disappointments for a club that has seen inconsistent play since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Louis Van Gaal will not be with Manchester United next season, however, Giggs also will not be given the job. Instead, Jose Mourinho is currently in talks with the club — despite them currently being stalled — and Giggs is getting anxious to perhaps have his Zinedine Zidane moment.

Let’s face it. Ryan Giggs will not be the manager of Manchester United next season. Perhaps he isn’t being vocal enough about how he wants (and probably deserves) the position. Many don’t feel as if he is ready to take on such a big role. While Giggs may see that as disrespect, others see it as him needing to take time to grow as a leader and manager.

Newcastle United seemed willing to take on young and inexperienced managers before they signed Steve McClaren. Patrick Viera was among those who were being considered. Viera was eventually snubbed and went on to manage New York City Football Club (NYCFC) with varying degrees of success so far.

Newcastle made the mistake of going with a manager who had a resume, not necessarily the most colorful, but one with a nice list of names. Experience as a player when being a manager can invoke the respect of players who play under you. On an off the field, Ryan Giggs (and Patrick Viera as well) was a respected leader. Despite little experience as a manager, what he has seen at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson has shown him what works. What he has seen as an assistant to David Moyes, and Louis Van Gaal has shown him what not to do.

The only problem is Giggs will not be given control of transfers, recruitment, and finances if hired as manager. The only man who Newcastle United is even considering giving that kind of autonomy is Rafael Benitez. And if Giggs comes to Tyneside, he may find that it’s not necessarily the managing job he so desires.
