Newcastle United vs Norwich is normally a dull game, but four goals from Georginio Wijanldum handed the Toon a much needed win.

Despite the Magpies looking shaky at the back, they still managed to score three goals in each half to ensure they collected their first three points of the season.

Wijanldum opened the scoring with a well taken goal from inside the area, before Canaries striker Dieumerci Mbokani levelled the game.

The Dutch signing then claimed his second of the match from a well taken header, and Spanish attacker Ayoze Perez made it 3-1.

Nathan Redmond, who impressed down the right hand side, scored his side’s last goal of the evening – before Wijnaldum hit the back of the net twice more and Aleksandar Mitrovic grabbed his second in two games.

More from Around St. James

Despite some shaky moments at the back, Newcastle and head coach Steve McLaren will be extremely happy with the game, which comes one week before they play rivals Sunderland.

With the Black Cats losing to West Bromwich Albion, the game couldn’t come at a better time for the Magpies.

After the game, the BBC reported that McLaren said:”I am relieved for the supporters and players who have endured a lot.

“We knew a win was around the corner, but we didn’t know when it would come. We played some really good football. We kept the faith with the players – everyone around us is saying what they’ve been saying, but we’ve got to keep tight.”

While Norwich boss Alex Neil added: “There was one decision made in the game, when I took Alex Tettey off, that didn’t have the effect it should have had.

“It made us more vulnerable at the back. When you concede that many goals it’s hard to take positives, but offensively we looked a threat.”
