What Newcastle United Should Do This Offseason

As I wrote previously, Newcastle United has a lot of work to do in the offseason, the biggest of which are transfer moves and a managerial search that becomes dire as the team attempts to prepare itself for next season, which fans and ownership alike are hoping will be much better than the previous season.

But let’s break down how Newcastle United should go about the offseason, and what moves they should take in order to ensure themselves a successful campaign come next Premier League season.

I truly believe that managerial search needs to be completed before transfers are made. While transfers are crucial to the success of Newcastle United, the lack of an experienced and proven manager are going to be detrimental to the team’s success. Once a manager is in place, the club will have an idea of what players they should pursue based on what the manager feels is necessary.

It is also crucial that the next manager have a say in transfer moves. One of the big reasons Newcastle United lacked great success under Alan Pardew was because he was unable to push big name transfer moves. Why do you think Pardew did pretty well with Crystal Palace this season? He has more freedom to actually be a manager. And that’s what Newcastle need to do. They must reevaluate the power of their managers because they’re the ones who manage the players, and do the major work on the pitch. They need more power over transfers.

Which brings us to the next most important thing that Newcastle United must look at this coming offseason, and that is, obviously, transfers. But first, the club must reevaluate their current transfer policy. Being cheap isn’t going to win the Premier League, and it won’t win the FA Cup. If Newcastle United ever want to compete in a European Cup again, they need to go back to the days where they were willing to throw some money around and prove that they were willing to compete. They need to look at the past and figure out what worked for the club.

Newcastle United need to stop looking at cheaper players and small time teams. Newcastle United needs to make all the headlines this summer when it comes to transfers. They should attempt to link themselves to every possible big name purchase on the market, and they need to follow through. For too long has Newcastle United been “linked” to players, but the deal never comes to fruition. That needs to change, and I don’t want to see less than £50 million spent this offseason. That’s pocket change, Mike Ashley, take note.

The players need to smarten up. We had some serious discipline issues come from Papisse Cisse, Moussa Sissoko, Fabricio Coloccini, and Mike Williamson. Each of them received a red card suspension this season, and they contributed to the many losses of the team when the losing streak began to arise. Cisse knows better than to spit at a fellow player, it’s disgraceful, and I thought it ruined the match completely. I don’t care who started, both players needed to be held responsible for their actions. I don’t want to see another spitting incident next season.

Coloccini is a great player, one of the best defenders in Newcastle United history, but would you be mad if I said that I think that his services at Newcastle United are no longer needed? I believe that his behavior on the pitch is unbecoming of a club captain. Daryl Janmaat is a more mature player in my opinion and deserves to have the captaincy.

The discipline issues of Newcastle United were severe, and whether or not they were out of frustration doesn’t matter. Their actions were that of children, and I’ve still seen children act more maturely than the way that some of Newcastle’s players acted this season.

These are just a few things of what Newcastle United should work on, and I believe they are the most important. See something you think should be added? Please let me know in the comments below, I’d love some feedback.
