It wouldn't be a shock if Sandro Tonali pushed for Newcastle transfer

Sandro Tonali is linked with a move away from Newcastle United in the January transfer window - Let's be honest, are we really surprised?

This week, it was reported that Sandro Tonali is wanted by three clubs in his home country Italy - AC Milan (obviously), Inter Milan and Juventus. However, the report did also claim that those clubs cannot afford to sign Tonali permanently, so their only option is a loan move.

Applying common sense to the situation, it is hard to envision Newcastle United allowing Tonali to leave on loan. It wouldn't benefit them at all and it would look silly, given the amount of money they pumped into his signing.

However, it wouldn't be a surprise if Sandro Tonali pushed for the transfer.

It wouldn't be a shock if Sandro Tonali pushed for Newcastle transfer

Currently, Sandro Tonali has no reason to be happy at Newcastle United. He is not playing as much as he was tipped to and he isn't even greeted to a positive viewing from the bench.

When Sandro Tonali first signed for Newcastle United, the expectation was that he would play close to every game. And he did, before he was banned for 10 months following gambling breeches.

So, this was out of Newcastle's control. There was criticism that the club should've done their due diligence before signing a player on the brink of suspension but lo and behold, these were the cards dealt to Newcastle.

In his second season at the club, Sandro Tonali should have been a mainstay in the starting lineup. This could not be further from the truth as the Italian midfielder has only started six Premier League games this season.

As pointed out Newcastle fans (via Geordie Boot Boys), it is not a common occurrence for Italian footballers to play outside the Serie A for very long. In fact, one fan even highlighted that only five players in the last Italy squad play outside of Serie A.

In many ways, this is similar to the England national team. Why would Italian players play away from their own beautiful country, when the Italian top flight is competitive enough and one of the best leagues in the world?

It might not be in Newcastle's interest to loan out Sandro Tonali. However, if the midfielder does push for a move away in the transfer window, whether temporary or permanent, would it really surprise anyone at this point?
