There has been a small but frightening underbelly of Newcastle United news in recent weeks which links us with a... new manager? I know, I'm just as confused as you are.

Eddie Howe seems to be building an empire at St James Park, yet he is consistently being linked with a move away as British tabloids are fixated on the idea of us getting a new manager. As much as this is my own opinion, I can't help but think this is fueled by the innate wish that Howe was the manager of the England international team in place of Gareth Southgate, it's just that nobody likes to admit it.

But admittedly, there is probably some truth behind the idea that the Newcastle owners are considering a different manager. While Eddie Howe is the best man for the job currently, as a club board you are bound to be fuelled by silverware and global interest - Unfortunately, Howe has shown throughout his career so far that he isn't a magnet for silverware and his reach only stretches as far as the United Kingdom.

The extent of Eddie Howe's trophy cabinet to date is a Championship trophy and while that's impressive in its own right (particularly when you consider how Bournemouth were before Howe took over), it isn't presitigious enough for what the Newcastle board would like to achieve. That said, Howe must start winning trophies if he wants to keep his place at St James Park.

Speaking on the topic is a very polarising journalist who is like Marmite, Richard Keys. On his website, Keys wrote the following:

"“Will Newcastle have to find themselves a ‘super-coach’ in order to push on?

If that’s a decision they’re considering – who might that be? Don’t rule out Jose Mourinho. And if it happens, remember where you read it first.”"

Richard Keys

While it seems that Keys is speaking on pure opinion, there is some factual evidence to back up his prediction. We reported only recently that the Newcastle boad were interested in the Roma boss Jose Mourinho, so who knows?
