Newcastle United's season so far hasn't been convincing; however, their recent performance against Manchester City has definitely attracted attention from the club's fans. While many big names returned back to form, for almost the first time this season, Eddie Howe's number 9 position looked convincing enough.
Newcastle United much ahead of others in the race for 24-year-old Lille star forward
Until now, Alexander Isak has just been the shadow of his previous season's heroics, and it was in Gordon's authority that the Magpies looked good from their forward front against Manchester City. Clearly, with Isak much out of form and the club's backup striker Callum Wilson injured, they certainly need a high-profile forward to work in Isak's absence.
Addressing the same, the Magpies club has been reported to be monitoring Lille's star forward, Jonathan David, in the role. Considering the player's current contract expiry with the French club in June 2025, chances could materialize significantly in Newcastle's favor for the move. As per reports, Newcastle has started talks with the player's entourage, given his desire to leave the club at the end of this season.
David, the 24-year-old Canadian prospect, boasts a significant record at Lille since he joined the French club in 2020. On the back of a brilliant 2023/24 campaign, where he amassed 26 goals and provided 9 assists, this season his stats have been simply sensational. Having 7 goals and 2 assists in his 11 appearances, David has been a menace for opposition clubs, being just one goal behind being Ligue 1's top goal scorer.
As his desire to leave Lille suggests, signing Jonathan David, who could come around £40m, can solve the Magpies' forward role issues for many years to come. However, as the talent's performances have been, Newcastle would need to race for the forward against Serie clubs Inter Milan and Juventus, as per TuttoJuve reports.
Fortunately enough, the club currently stands as the favorite to sign David, given their readiness to spend the most on the star forward. Given Paul Mitchell's situation, who would need to do convincing signings next summer, Jonathan David's move to the Magpies further intensifies. With him being added to Eddie Howe's setup, the club might have one of the best attack forces in Europe.
