We are a week and a half away from the January transfer window, which means the Newcastle transfer news is starting to heat up. One name we are linked with more than others is Kalvin Phillips, as the Manchester City man is linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium since there he's surplus to requirements and struggles for game time.

As Kalvin Phillips looks to get more game time to bolster his chances of making the England squad for EURO 2024, many claim that Newcastle is the obvious choice. We struggle for depth in the midfield and with both Sandro Tonali (suspension) and Elliot Anderson (injury) out for a long time, it seems obvious that this is the position we need to strengthen in the most.

However, it won't be as simple to persuade Kalvin Phillips since there are other options which he may prefer more favourably than Newcastle. According to a new report by The Telegraph, Juventus have a slight advantage over Newcastle when it comes to signing Kalvin Phillips. It it stated that Phillips would first like to learn about his chances of game time and at this point in time, Juventus are able to promise more minutes than Newcastle.

While there are certainly other options in the midfield, Phillips is the best choice for us since we would be able to sign him on loan and he is the closest player to match Sandro Tonali's attacking presence. Having experience in the Premier League and world stage would bring about a level of prestige and cultural capital which would benefit our young and upcoming players, particularly the likes of Lewis Miley who would take advantage of the lessons by a seasoned pro like Phillips.
