Kalvin Phillips has been the focal point of much of Newcastle transfer news so far this month, but it appears he could be heading elsewhere. For those who aren't aware, Newcastle have pulled out of the race for Kalvin Phillips after a "change of heart", which seems to be a codeword for we cannot afford what Man City are asking.
Well, regardless what you think of Newcastle pulling out of the race, it seems this tale could be in its last chapter, and its one which Newcastle fans may not want to read.
Newcastle transfer news: West Ham contact former Eddie Howe target Kalvin Phillips
According to a sensational update from the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, West Ham are now in direct contact with Man City for the signing of Kalvin Phillips, as it's one that the Hammers will insist on.
We have to take off our hats to West Ham, who seem to be much more proactive in this race than we were, despite it looking like we had a head-start at times.
In truth, Kalvin Phillips was the right player to pop up at the wrong time. We need to sign a midfielder of his qualities, who would be the perfect match for our squad and tactics under Eddie Howe. However, he popped up at the wrong time due to our FFP issues and not being able to commit to a long-term contract.
If Phillips does sign for West Ham, which I must admit looks more likely now, then it will be a shame to see him play against us. After all, we play the Hammers at the end of March which is crunch time and since we could both be competing for a place in Europe, it will be an important match.
