Newcastle transfer news: Nick Pope injury forces Eddie Howe to shortlist a 23-year-old replacement

According to a report by Fichajes, Newcastle are one of three Premier League clubs interested in signing the Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Alongside the Magpies in the race to sign the 23-year-old will be Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Only recently have Newcastle been interested in signing a goalkeeper and admittedly the Nick Pope injury is their sole driving force to sign a new shotstopper. However, to locate an exceptional young talent in Mamardashvili in such a short amount of time is a testament to the Newcastle recruitment team.

For those who aren't familiar with Mamardashvili, he is a 23-year-old goalkeeper who plays for Valencia and the Georgia national team. He's had a great start to the season, starting every match for Valencia in La Liga and keeping five clean sheets so far, which is a good return.

However, Valencia are underperforming and as one of their biggest assets, they won't want to let Mamardashvili go easily, With that said, I would expect Valencia to charge a premium price for any club interested in signing him in January. Particularly considering the interested clubs are in the Premier League, they can certainly afford to do this.

Moreover, it's a seller's market for goalkeepers in January, considering there are many clubs battling for a small select bunch of goalkeepers throughout the month. It will certainly make for an interesting transfer battle, and one I think we could win if we progress in the Champions League.
