As we are in the second week of the January transfer window, Newcastle fans will hope for less Newcastle transfer news and more transfer action. Although we have been linked with a variety of players, we are approaching the time when Eddie Howe needs to make some actual moves and secure some players.

Newcastle transfer news: Magpies shortlist former Chelsea defender now at Barcelona

According to a new report from Sport, we have been linked with Andreas Christensen of Barcelona. It was the same outlet who originally linked us with the Danish centre back when we last seeked a centre back signing, but it looks like Eddie Howe hasn't changed his mind.

In fact, this transfer window could be the perfect opportunity to land the former Chelsea star, since the report states Barcelona are willing to sell some players to fund their big transfer plans. Also, given the financial state of the club right now, it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world for the Catalans to let go of some players like Christensen.

Ageing at 27 years old, Christensen is entering the prime stages of his career and having played alongside some excellent players already in his career, he would come to St James Park with a wealth of experience at the highest level.

From Eddie Howe's perspective, signing a Premier League experienced player like Christensen is a wise idea given the age of his centre backs. Jamaal Lascelles is getting on a bit and while Fabian Schar recently extended his stay, this was only a short-term extension since he isn't getting any younger himself. Bringing in Christensen from Barcelona would tighten up the centre back position for at least a few more years.
