Yesterday, the centrepiece of the Newcastle transfer news was Kalvin Phillips as we reported on Fabrizio Romano's comments, essentially saying Newcastle were leading the race. Since Juventus have backed out of the transfer pursuit, it's believed Eddie Howe is the front-runner to sign Phillips and today's reports are even more exciting.
Newcastle transfer news: Journalist provides update on "ongoing" talks with Kalvin Phillips
According to the transfer specialist Rudy Galetti on X (formerly Twitter), talks are ongoing between Newcastle and Manchester City for the loan transfer of Kalvin Phillips. It's believed the player is in favour of signing for the Toon, particularly with a keen eye on making the England squad for EURO 2024.
With Newcastle and Manchester City meeting in the Premier League this weekend, I think it's unlikely that a deal will be struck this week. After all, if Phillips were to join Newcastle on loan, then he wouldn't be able to play in this fixture which would be a detriment to both teams. Therefore, there is no immediate rush for this deal to be completed, but it's good to see that all parties are in agreement and pushing for the deal to happen.
Phillips is the main transfer target for Eddie Howe and it's plain to see why. With the injury crisis at St James Park affecting us in the midfield and Sandro Tonali being suspended, a short-term move for a player with Premier League experience was always the best shout.
Phillips would arrive and take little time to settle into the club since he is an Eddie Howe-suited midfielder. Also, he would arrive with an incentive to play well and achieve success between now and the end of the season, with his current chances of making the EURO 2024 squad under Gareth Southgate running slim.
