Most of the Newcastle transfer news this month and in the buildup to the January transfer window has centred around one man - Kalvin Phillips. The Man City midfielder has been linked with a move away from the champions, with Newcastle thought to be his most likely destination.

Newcastle transfer news: Eddie Howe faces competition from Spurs for Kalvin Phillips

Having seen off competition from Juventus earlier in the month, Eddie Howe now faces a fresh problem in his pursuit to sign the England midfielder. According to a report from The Northern Echo, Spurs have now entered the race to sign Kalvin Phillips in place of Newcastle United. The report states that now Eric Dier has left the Lilywhites to sign for Bayern Munich, there is space in their squad which they see as a free pass to sign Kalvin Phillips.

From the player's perspective, he wants to push for a place in the England squad for the upcoming EURO 2024. In my opinion, his best bet to achieve this is to sign for Newcastle instead of Spurs. Times are uncertain in North London with Ange Postecoglou still yet to figure out his best starting eleven.

Furthermore, it's common knowledge that Newcastle are depleted of most of their midfielders. Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson are injured so they are unavailable for selection, while Sandro Tonali is suspended. Also, if you factor in the potential Bruno Guimaraes injury which is making the rounds, this only opens more space in the starting eleven for Kalvin Phillips to slot in.

But it doesn't look promising that we are now halfway into the January transfer window, without any real moves made by Newcastle. I'm not saying that we should have all of our business done by this point, but we were in the most need given the injury crisis.
