In the coming weeks as we enter the second half of the January transfer window, Newcastle fans should expect most of the Newcastle transfer news to centre around signing a new midfielder or two. This is the position which has plagued Eddie Howe the most, with several central midfielders out of action through either injury or suspension.

All it takes is for one more player to be injured or suspended in the midfield for it to become a catastrophe for Eddie Howe, if it isn't already. That in mind, Newcastle must be efficient in the coming weeks to secure the services of a new central midfielder.

Well, there are certainly options for Eddie Howe. As reported by Tutto Atalanta, Newcastle have joined Juventus in the race to sign Ederson of Atalanta. The Brazilian midfielder has been eyeballed by Newcastle in the past, but it's thought that Eddie Howe's interest has peaked again, thanks to an incredible season.

Indeed, Ederson has started the 2023/24 Serie A campaign well. In 19 appearances for Atalanta this season, he has been in the starting eleven 95% of the time. Throughout, he has contributed to four goals and provided one assist. That's quite an impressive return for a player who primarily plays as a central midfielder.

Although, the 24-year-old is a box-to-box player who carries the ball in his stride well. This is perfect for Eddie Howe, who is missing the attacking importance of Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson in his side. Furthermore, adding more Brazilian flair to this star-studded Newcastle side would definitely not be the end of the world, and could be the catalyst for more attacking movements in the second half of the underwhelming season so far.
