In case you missed the earlier Newcastle transfer news, the Newcastle higher-ups are booked into have a meeting this week with the aim of discussing their route to address the Joelinton injury. This panic meeting comes as a result of the versatile Brazilian being ruled out for the remainder of the season, requiring surgery with a long recovery time.

Indeed, it would appear Eddie Howe has signings on his mind. For the last few months, he has been linked with a move for Man City fringe midfielder Kalvin Phillips, However, it is proving difficult to find a consensus with Man City, with both clubs having a different view of how the transfer should pan out.

With this in mind, Eddie Howe isn't looking to downgrade. Instead, he has been quite optimistic with his latest transfer target if Sport Bild is anything to go by. They report that Newcastle will make a move for Joshua Kimmich this month.

Kimmich has just 18 months remaining on his contract and it looks likely he could finally leave the Bavarian side Bayern Munich after he signed from RB Leipzig as a youngster. From Bayern's perspective, they won't accept losing Kimmich for free, so they are prepared to enter negotiations with Newcastle before his contract expires. Kimmich would prefer to leave Bayern in the summer, though.

In my opinion, the options don't come much better than Kimmich. Of course, it remains to be seen if the deal is possible with FFP breathing down our necks, but I predict we will be in a better position to approach this transfer in summer anyway, which would benefit all parties. I would welcome the signing of Kimmich this month since we are desperate for midfielders, but let's see.
